Philippe Boulle IDNDR

Boulle Commode c. 1709
This commode was one of a pair ordered at the end of Louis XIV's reign for his bedroom in the Grand Trianon. They are the only surviving pieces of furniture indisputably made for the king by the famous cabinet-maker André-Charles Boulle. Their strange shape, suggesting a chest slid beneath a table, made them prototypes of the "commode", a piece of furniture that would be developed throughout the eighteenth century. Furthermore, the curve of the drawers---one convex, the other concave?testifies to the technical mastery of veneering and prefigures the rococo style that would exploit the play of curves and countercurves. Yet they are still marked by the Louis-XIV taste for lavish, contrasting materials and colours: gilded bronze scrollwork, dark brown tortoiseshell, powerful winged figure of gold plate, red griotte marble top.
